Correspondence between Samuel Lane and various St George’s staff and other related individuals, 1829-1849, regarding medical education at Windmill Street School of Medicine and Samuel Lane’s School of Anatomy and Medicine adjoining St George’s Hospital (Grosvenor Street school); establishing Lane’s school of anatomy and medicine, competition for applying for surgeonship at St George’s Hospital, including newspaper cuttings and printed letters to the governors of St George’s Hospital, and a potential merger of the two schools associated with St George’s Hospital (Lane’s school at Grosvenor Street and Kinnerton Street school of medicine which eventually became the official medical school of St George’s Hospital). Correspondents include Benjamin Brodie, Robert Keate, James Hope, James Arthur Wilson, Thomas Tatum, Caesar Hawkins, Henry Ancell and Herbert Mayo.

The partial transcripts for some of the letters were originally published in the St George's Hospital and Medical School Gazette in the 1920s by Robert Rutson James.

The collection relates to Hunter’s dispute with St George’s Hospital and the division of pupils’ fees among the surgeons, which Hunter perceived as unfair, arguing he brought in more pupils than the other surgeons. The dispute culminated in a meeting in Oct 1793 at the hospital, during which Hunter suffered a heart attack and died.

In addition to the papers relating to the dispute, there are some additional notes, some collected by Charles Hawkins and some by George Edwards. These include copies of two letters from John Hunter’s pupil James Williams to his sister, describing working with Hunter, dissections and the work of the so-called ‘Resurrection Men’, and describing Hunter’s death. These were acquired apparently from a descendant of Williams by Edwards; the location of the original letters is unknown.
