Additional materials relating to the Nurses' Voices project, including correspondence, publications and ephemera
Additional miscellaneous nursing memorabilia, grouped by typed of material
Records relating to nursing training at Atkinson Morley's Hospital. Note that AMH was always affiliated to St George's (beginning as a convalescent home for St George's patients), and that in the post-war period trainee nurses from St George's routinely undertook placements there to gain experience in neurosurgical nursing. Researchers interested in AMH should therefore also consult the general St George's registers sub-series (NU/1/1).
Badges, medals and jewellery relating to nursing or St George's Hospital
Records relating to nurse training at Bolingbroke, Battersea and Putney hospitals, whose training schools were amalgamated (c. early 1960s?) to form the Battersea, Bolingbroke & Putney Combined Training School (Battersea and Bolingbroke having already merged previously). Following the NHS reorganisation of 1974 (by which time Battersea General Hospital had already closed), these records were transferred to the South West London Group School of Nursing (based at St James' Hospital, Balham) and subsequently St George's District School of Nursing.
Records relating to the planning/construction of St George's Hospital buildings, mostly on the Tooting Grove site
Items relating to Clara Jeynes, posthumously donated by her niece Mary Higgs.
For her photograph album, see NU/6/1/2.
Items of nurses' uniform/clothing
Typescripts of conference papers and speeches delivered by Powell
Correspondence received or written by Muriel Powell
Files of correspondence and related documents
Digital copies of the Nurses' Voices interviews, including audio files, transcripts, and scanned forms and photographs
Draft manuscript lecture on Wilson’s antarctic expedition which he gave at the Hunterian Society, St George’s Hospital and Medical School, and related documents
The framed artworks and photographs consist of original and copy works (original works have been indicated where known on the item level), including photographs by Herbert Ponting taken in 1911-1912, drawings and prints by Edward Wilson, photographs taken by Mike Stroud in 1984 and other photographs, including a portrait of Oriana Wilson.
Some of the artworks and photographs have multiple copies, framed and unframed.
Registers and training records relating to nurse training at hospitals in the Epsom area, including Epsom District Hospital, West Park Hospital, Manor Hospital, and St Ebba's Hospital. The last three of these formed part of the 'Epsom cluster' of mental hospitals, though St Ebba's (which was also affiliated to the Carshalton School of Nursing) was changed in 1962 into a hospital for the mentally handicapped.
These records were presumably transferred to Kingston following the merger of Epsom and Kingston schools of nursing (c. early 1990s): the typed labels affixed to many of the volumes appear to have been added at a later date.
Reference copies of nursing examination papers
Letters and memorabilia relating to Florence Nightingale.
For copies of books/writings by Nightingale, see NU/4/4.
Items relating to Powell's funeral and other posthumous memorials to her
Nurse training records relating to the Grove Hospital (originally the Grove Fever Hospital), Tooting. Note that the Grove became a branch of St George's in 1954.
The records are written on a London County Council form ('Nursing Service – Record of Training'; after 1950 the LCC heading changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving, lecture attendance, examination marks, ward reports, and conduct marks. A majority of the records also have additional Quarterly Ward Report (or 'Sister's Report on Probationer Nurse') forms inserted, and sometimes other documents (correspondence relating to requests for references, written coursework, Fever Training schedules, etc).
Information booklets on a variety of subjects relating to nursing and hospitals
Items relating to Joan E. Knock
Items relating to Joan Nash. An accompanying card (in NU/5/33/1) states: 'Among the papers of the late Joan Patricia Nash are various items that may be relevant to an archive Nursing Collection. Sorted this ninth day of January, MMVI – Peter Newman Brooks, Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge'.
Items donated by/relating to June Hutton (née Shires; previous married name Richardson)
Records relating to the training of nurses and midwives at Kingston Hospital (latterly Kingston & Esher School of Nursing). Because St George's formed a joint faculty with Kingston University in the 1990s, these Kingston registers ended up being transferred to the St George's nursing collection.
Loose photographs arranged by institution or subject.
Many of the photographs have been assigned 'PH' reference numbers, which relate to an older, incomplete catalogue listing.
