Medical notes: 'About four weeks before admission he received a blow on the right upper eyelid which broke the skin and caused considerable surrounding inflammation which was slightly erysipelatous. He attended as a surgical out-patient for about 3 weeks, during which time the facial swelling extended downwards to the submaxillary region where a protuberant and acutely painful tumour formed'
