Medical notes: 'Former admission S.R. [Surgical Register]. 11. 1906. Patient then had rectal symptoms of 3 months duration. The patient's father died of cancer of the rectum at the age of 28. In Jan [January] 1906 a large mass of growth firmly fixed and encircling the bowel was found 16 inches from the Anus. The index finger could just be inserted into the lumen. The cervix uteri and posterior vaginal formix were pushed forward by the growth. A fortnight before admission severe griping pains commenced followed by abdominal distension'
