Medical notes: 'There was no family history of malignant disease. The man was a commercial traveller of temperate habits, and good health till 3 months before admission. Then he noticed that he had already lost flesh and he began to suffer from aching at the pit of the stomach, which was relieved by taking food. Latterly, however, this pain was increased by food. Six weeks before admission he vomited a large quantity of red blood, but vomiting of any sort was rare. For several weeks he had taken no solid food at all and had been absolutely anorexic'
