Medical notes: 'Patient admitted for pulsating swelling in the region of the R. [right] sterno clavicular joint – He was formerly a solider and was 6 years in India – he went through the S. [South] African war, after which he left the service and took to work as a bargee. Quite well till 11 months before admission when he noticed pain in the R. [Right] side of head and R. [Right] shoulder. There was unilateral R. [Right] sweating from almost the beginning. The R. [Right] arm had been distinctly weak for past 6 months. The lump in the region of the sterno clavicular joint had been noticed for 5 or 6 weeks: it had increased considerably in size during the 14 days before admission. Loss of flesh lately. No dysphagia. Doubtful history of syphilis'

Robust man: had served under the confederate flag in the american war: Diaphoresis habitually scanty: nearly always drunk from 1860 to 1872: chiefly on spirits: tolerably sober after that. Venereal sore in 1862: no constitutional manifestns [manifestations]. Attack of L. [Left] hemiplegia in 1870: from that time he had occasional loss of power in the leg, or pain in the arm, with shivering if exposed to chills. Subject to frontal headaches, and intolerant of fat for 3 or 4 years. Subject to palpitation for 12 mo [months]. Five weeks before admission his throat became sore, and painful in swallowing: after a week it was less so'

Medical notes: 'An old soldier, formerly of Napoleon’s Polish lancers. He had fought in nearly all the wars of the empire. He had been frost-bitten at Beresina [battle of Berezina, 1812], and again at Moscow [?battle of Borodina, 1812]. He was wounded at Austerlitz [battle of Austerlitz, 1805], recovered a sabre cut at Vittoria [battle of Vitoria, 1813]. Altogether he shewed seven scars. He escaped from Waterloo [battle of Waterloo, 1815] unhurt. Latterly he enjoyed a pension for a few years, but lost it on account of his republican views. He was expelled from Paris and contrived to get his living by selling pencils about the streets of London. He attributed his illness to eating sprats’
