Medical notes: 'He has been very healthy, and in hard work as a coal heaver, until about 7 weeks before admission when he began to feel lumbar aching after carrying heavy sacks. There was no sudden onset of the pain; it was inconstant, sometimes acute, running neither upwards nor downwards, greatest on the right side of the lower dorsal vertebrae but felt also on the left side & in the umbilical region'
