Medical notes: 'His previous life, so far as his wife was aware, was healthy with the exception of an attack of rheumatic fever 16 years ago. Since then he has been in active employment as an undertaker's assistant. No history of headache or nervous symptoms. His 7 children were in good health. Five days before admission he began to complain of pains in his thighs but he was able to go on with his work for two days & then a slight headache grew rapidly severe & he vomited abundantly & became delirious on the evening of the same day and has remained since in quiet busy delirium'
