Medical notes: 'No satisfactory history was to be obtained: the patient, whose native tongue was Flemish, spoke English but imperfectly, and was not very clear in his ideas. He attributed his illness to drinking a glass of ices water when hot, 12 days before admission. He had a rigor immediately or shortly after, and commenced to suffer pain in the epigastrium. The second, third, and fourth days he vomited freely. He sweated profusely from the first'
