Medical notes: 'No family history of cancer. The patient's father was asthmatic. The patient went to sea at the age of 14, and entered the army at 24. He travelled in many parts of the world and saw service in the Crimean campaign. He contracted no fever abroad or other illnesses. When about 40 years old he had a severe attack of ‘inflammation of the lungs'. For many years he had suffered from winter cough, and almost all his life had been liable to asthma in damp weather'
