Medical notes: 'This man was in the army till 1861, and subsequently he was a policeman. Except scarlatina in childhood he had no serious illness at all till 8 years before his death when he was operated upon at Guy's Hospital for ‘ulcer of the rectum'. There was no serious haemorrhage so far as he knew, but the history given was that his illness began suddenly within a week of the operation. He turned a waxy colour having previously been of normal complexion. However he was fairly able-bodied till some 2 or 3 years later when he found that he was losing strength and easily exhausted'
