The upper end of the left femur, from a woman, aged 74, showing a fracture of the neck on the left side. The line of fracture is external to the capsular ligaments behind, near the lesser trochanter, but in front it runs above the level of the intertrochanteric line and is therefore within the joint. The neck is driven into the trochanter, so the latter process is widened. The union is firm and bony throughout. The patient was treated in the hospital from Jan.13th to March 4th,1857. She fractured the neck of the right femur in February, 1861 and died from bedsores.
