History

Educated at Cambridge University and University College Hospital, London, where as a medical student he witnessed the death of George Orwell from tuberculosis.

He was appointed consultant physician at St George's, University of London in 1963. He was instrumental in establishing infectious diseases as an academic discipline, and was appointed the first professor of microbial diseases at St George's.

He co-edited the textbook on antibiotic therapy, 'Antibiotic and Chemotherapy', helped to develop pyrazinamide as a tuberculosis treatment and conducted early research into mescaline. He published widely on meningitis, respiratory infections and the optimal use of antibiotics. The archives of St George's holds his research papers and a smallpox testing kit. In 1989 he gave an interview for a St George's oral history project, talking about his career.

He retired from clinical practice in 1989, but continued to serve on Meningitis Research Foundation's Scientific Advisory Panel as vice-chair, trustee and medical advisor. He also continued to contribute seminars, lectures and research days at St George's. With his wife Joan they were instrumental in establishing a water garden at St George's to create a more enjoyable environment for patients and their families.

He married Joan Richley in 1955; they had three children.
