History

Born in India, but educated in England and apprenticed to a rural physician.

Medical Student at St George's Hospital Medical School, MRCS 1840; house surgeon to Sir Benjamin Brodie; assistant surgeon 1846, surgeon 1867; demonstrator of anatomy, lecturer of anatomy.

Lived in Canada in 1843-1845 as resident physician to the governor-general of Canada, Lord Metcalfe. Surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children. FRCS 1846; president of the Pathological Society 1875-1877; president of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society 1886-1887. Surgeon-in-ordinary to the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII.

Married in 1850, with five children. Retired 1880; died in 1897
