Born in Scotland. Educated at Edinburgh; graduated as doctor of medicine in 1816.

Physician at St George's Hospital 1833-1845.

Worked as a physician in the army. Licentiate of the College of Physicians 1821, fellow 1836, lecturer 1837 and consiliarius 1839.

Resigned St George's in 1845 due to ill health. Died at Chanonry, Old Aberdeen, 7 Dec 1852.
