History

Pupil at St George's Hospital. Assistant to John Gunning, surgeon at the hospital. Elected surgeon to succeed Charles Hawkins, competing with Everard Home (later Sir Everard), who was supported by John Hunter. Keate later succeeded Hunter as surgeon-general to the army in 1793. He resigned from St George's in 1813.

Surgeon to the prince of Wales (later George IV), and Chelsea Hospital. Master at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1802, 1809, 1818 and fellow of the Royal Society. Keate was the first to tie the subclavian artery for aneurysm.

Died 5 Jul 1821, aged 76.
