'Faint feeling' in epigastrium for ½ hr [hour] after food once or twice in last 12 mo [months]. Purpuric maculation on legs from April 1878. About 5 wks [weeks] before admission pain commenced gradually in the abdomen. It continued, increasing steadily in severity, unaffected by period of day, by eating or breathing deeply; - the abdomen at the same time enlarging progressively'
