Pneumothorax apparatus

Portable artificial pneumothorax apparatus (aka 'Maxwell's Box') produced by the Genito-Urinary Manufacturing Company, London, consisting of a wooden carrying box containing pump, regulating valve, manometer, filter, and fragments of broken rubber tubing.

This device was used to induce an artificial pneumothorax (collapsed lung) in tuberculosis patients by injecting gas into the pleural cavity, with the aim of 'resting' the lung so that it could heal more easily.
