Medical notes: The patient, fifteen days before her admission, had had much numbness and tingling in the fingers and toes, soon followed by pain and aching in the limbs and trunk. The pain was especially severe in the course of the spinal column and in the nape of the neck. There was also progressive loss of power in the arms and legs so that on admission she was completely paraplegic.
