She was married nine months before her first admission, but was never pregnant, and the catamenia were regular till six weeks before she came to the hospital, when they ceased. She seems to have been ailing somewhat for about two years, when at Christmas 1889 she first noticed swelling of the left side of the abdomen.

Medical notes: 'This man was an engine-drive, and worked in that capacity till within 7 weeks of his death. He was married and had four children, and was reported to have enjoyed excellent health. He was not known to have had any serious illness. There was no history of syphilis, and he was temperate in alcohol. In September 1890 he received a blow on the back of the head from a piece of iron, but was not concussed and very soon recovered from the few days' headache which followed. About 7 weeks before admission he began to suffer from severe headache, and to lose his memory. He soon became unable to do his work, and the headache and mental deficiency increased. There were no fits and no delusions'

She had scarlatina in childhood, never chorea; and her only attack of rheumatism (with the exception of slight rheumatic pains a few days before admission) occurred in November 1890 and confined her to bed for 6 weeks. She appeared to have recovered fair health and returned to work. On March 2nd at 1pm while eating her dinner she suddenly became paralysed on the right side. There was no pain in the head, no loss of consciousness and no loss of speech'

Medical notes: 'The father of this man died of galloping consumption. The patient was a bricklayer's labourer who had been accustomed to robust health. At the age of 24 he contracted syphilis which was followed by secondary symptoms. At the age of 25 he had a sudden attack of hemiplegia on the ?left side without loss of consciousness: from this he recovered gradually in the course of 6 months. Five weeks before admission he noticed a fullness of the head and throat with blueness on stooping, and dyspnoea on exertion'

Medical notes: 'Not seen by the medical registrar. The upper of the two written by the curator [of the pathological museum] was the real name of this girl. She had no voluntary alias, but her name was misquoted upon admission. It was stated that her previous health had been good, and she had never suffered from serious illness. On October 7th she went to a situation in service to Brighton from her home in Faversham. In the evening she wrote a post-card home to signify her safe arrival, and was probably well at this time. However at Brighton she did no work and took to bed very soon. She was seen by a medical man who gave an opinion that there was nothing the matter; and on October 10th it was determined to send her home, since she was useless as a servant. She came to London in charge of a fellow-servant who reported that on the journey she became quite silent, and that at Victoria station she was obviously unfit to travel farther. Hence she was brought to St George's
