St George's Hospital School of Nursing

Various versions of the prospectus for St George's Hospital School of Nursing, including six variant copies of an illustrated brochure and seven accompanying paper booklets (for the years 1955-1957, 1958-1959, 1960-1963, and 1966-1967 – two of these are enclosed at the back of the brochures).

Although all of the booklets date from the period in which Muriel Powell was Matron, the earliest brochure refers to her predecessor Helen Hanks, who resigned in 1947.

Press cuttings about Powell

Press cuttings about or referring to Muriel Powell, including reports on public appearances and pronouncements, honours, etc., some with photographs. The earliest item – 'Two Girl Guides Save Curate' (Daily Mirror, 10 Jul 1933) – refers to a 'Gertrude Powell', but this was apparently Muriel; the other girl guide was Mary Gliddon (see Nurses' Voices interview, NU/7/2/42).

St George's Hospital

Photographs apparently taken at St George's Hospital/School of Nursing or other sites relating to it.

Many of the images have been assigned 'PH' reference numbers, which relate to an older catalogue listing; some also have labels stating 'Chapter' and 'Fig.' numbers, indicating that they were to be used in some written work [not identified – possibly never completed?] about the history of nursing at St George's.

Group photographs

Black and white and colour photographs of groups of student/pupil nurses and staff at St James' Hospital (excluding those taken at prizegivings, for which see NU/6/2/5/4), including photographs featuring cast members of the BBC nursing soap opera 'Angels', which was filmed at the hospital. Also includes an early sepia image (c. 1910s-1920s?) which is not explicitly labelled as St James', but was stored with the rest of this material.

Note that more St James' group photographs can be found in the albums NU/6/1/1/4-6.

Student and staff nurse group photographs

Black and white group photographs of student and staff nurses, many featuring matron Muriel Powell. Some are annotated with names or accompanied with a typed list. Includes at least one photograph of nurses from Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton who were based for part of their training at St George's. Also includes two older water-damaged photographs of student and staff nurses (c.1910s-1920s) mounted on oversize boards, which can be identified as St George's from the list of names written on the reverse of one of them (which includes future matron Helen Hanks).

Family and friends

Black and white and colour photographs featuring Powell's family and friends (often alongside Powell herself), including her parents, Nellie Powell Smith, Paul and Phyllis Gliddon, and Mary Gliddon. Also includes photographs of St John's church, Cinderford, Gloucestershire (where Paul Gliddon served as vicar) and its restoration.

Early nursing photographs

Early black and white photographs (i.e. 19th-early 20th century – mostly reproductions) of groups of nurses and hospital wards, including four images mounted on board and an oversize poster reproducing a series of photographs taken in America entitled 'What It Means to Be a Trained Nurse' (originally published in the Ladies' Home Journal, 1898 – also includes second sheet with accompanying article text).

St James' nurse personal album

Unlabelled album of black and white photographs (with some handwritten captions) apparently taken by a nurse who trained/worked at St James' Hospital, containing the following inserted note from Heather Bond, chair of the St George's Nurses' League (14 Apr 2000): 'Photograph album of a nurse at St James Hospital Balham in 1927 – Bought in a carboot sale in 1999 by Mr Pat Fry who thought it should be in the hospital archive so gave it to Alex Baker, business manager.'

In addition to shots of St James' nurses and buildings (often on the roof), the album also contains holiday photos of Ramsgate and Bournemouth, and portraits of family members.

Nursing careers booklets

Information booklets promoting careers in nursing (and the NHS more broadly), mostly produced by the Department of Health and Social Security and the Central Office of Information, and featuring photographic illustrations. Titles include:

Metal-backed binder containing records of student nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1950s-1960s but did not complete their training, arranged alphabetically by surname (G-L – no records for the second half of the alphabet are extant in this collection). Each individual record includes the following information: name, address, non-resident address, next of kin, age, date of birth, religion, country of origin (for records from 1960s onwards), marital status/maiden name, education, previous occupation, dates of training and leaving, number of lectures attended, study days, examinations, health record, sickness and special leave/holidays, and 'particulars of training' (dates and types of ward experience, with brief reports).

The records generally have a passport-style photograph affixed to the top right-hand corner.

Springfield Hospital

Colour photographs taken at Springfield Hospital, including a set stored in a green 'Photo Shop' wallet and four additional prints mounted on card for display (three with captions added). They include exterior shots of hospital buildings, scenes of elderly patients/residents sitting in chairs, a staff retirement party, interior corridors and wards, etc.

These photos can be dated to around 1990 based on a visible newspaper headline in one of them.

Miscellaneous personal/portrait photographs of people connected to St George's, including Sister Chapman, Sister Bryant ('looking at Coronation Procession from Drummond Ward'), and Dame Helen Cargill, as well as personal photographs of a 1953 rugby tour (presumably the St George's team?) and a visit of St George's students to Battersea Park Fun Fair.
