Medical notes: 'History. Weakly subject: appetite never good: disgust to fat: 'inflammation of lungs' at 21: coughs every winter as long as she remembered. Nothing else remarkable in the previous history: no previous miscarriages (5 children born alive). 'Weight' at epigastrium after food for some 6 months. Cough commenced in October as usual and continues as usual. 11 ½ weeks before admn [admission], the appetite failed. Three or four days later the cough somewhat suddenly became severe, and was accompanied by pain about the back and shoulders, increased by breathing. From that time she lost flesh, sweated profusely at night, and suffered from headache about three days out of each week. The pain disappeared before admn [admission]. (No haemoptysis)'

No very clear history could be obtained: she said that a month before she went out in a cold wind, which 'caught her' in the abdomen. From that time the pains above described had been present, the bowels had acted 3-4 times a day and she had become very weak. There had been difficulty in micturition for a fortnight: she had vomited several times a day for a week or more'

His legs became swollen and painful, his head ached, he became faint on the least exertion and sweated freely. He was treated by a doctor for rheumatism, but as his symptoms became aggravated, he came up to the hospital. He had had cough and hoarseness for 3 or 4 days but no haemoptysis. He had never had any previous illness save occasional R. [Right] otorrhoea. The last time he had had such discharge was 3 weeks before admittance. He denied syphilis, but confessed to smoking 25 cigarettes daily'
