Medical notes: 'On the morning of his admission, this patient was kicked on the mouth by a horse. He was slightly stunned by the blow but soon recovered a tolerable degree of consciousness. Upon admission the lower jaw was found fractured in two placed and a scalp wound was discovered on the posterior part of the scalp, supposed to have been produced by a fall backwards when he was kicked’
