Medical notes: 'This man was a general labourer. He had at one time been a baker. There was no family history of disease: his grandfather and great-grandfather lived to the ages of 99 and 100. His health was good till Nov 1889 when he began to experience pain in the left side of the chest on exertion, not amounting to angina. About the following Christmas oedema of the legs first appeared. He lost strength gradually, and his skin became darker during the first 6 months of 1890. In the middle of July he became jaundiced, painlessly. He vomited a good deal towards the end of August and hence applied at this hospital'
