[In-patient] here in '98 [1898] with well marked syphilitic lesions of the joints and bones which cleared up under Pot: Iod: [Potassium Iodide] – Whilst in the Hospital he appeared peculiarly susceptible to Erysipelas, suffering from several attacks. His condition otherwise precisely as on his second admission this year - 2nd admission. He complained of nothing in particular beyond dull yellow colour, and of weakness and 'want of spring' in his legs'

Medical notes: 'History. Subject to sick headaches: fat productive of nausea: nothing else remarkable in the previous history. Occasional epigastric and interscapular pain after meals for two years. The same symptom constant from the beginning of May, the pain starting half an hour after each meal and lasting almost till the next. Bowels irregular during this period (either too loose or too confined), appetite small, and the patient weak. Vomiting about once a day from July (generallly an hour after dinner) and catamenia scanty. Vomiting of '1 ½ pint' of blood seven days before admn [admission], suddenly and without warning'

Never robust: bad living till marriage: appetite always small: winter coughs for 8 or 9 years: catamenia scanty. Severe confinement on Dec. [December] 2nd 1876: very weak from that time: lactation scanty. In Novr [November] 1877 severe pain commenced gradually in the R. [Right] side of the abdomen; and increased steadily, being unaffected by period of day, by food or respiration. About the middle of Jan. [January] 1878 on severe paroxysms attacked him suddenly and lasted several hours until relieved by turpentine fomentations. The pain from the first was accompanied by constipation, and by vomiting, which was hardly ever absent for a whole day, and sometimes severe and constant for several. From Xmas she laid up'
