Medical notes: 'This patient first noticed a 'tired feeling' in her legs, together with pain in the thighs in May '98 [1898], since then this had increased, and was accompanied by so much loss of power in the legs that on admission here she could not stand without assistance. She had had pain extending from the occiput to between the shoulders, which occasionally radiated down the arms, and she experienced pain on flexing the head forward, tho' [though] she could rotate it more easily. Since the onset there had been constipation and incontinence of urine. She denied any unasthenic[?] or numbness of the limbs'
