Always passed quantities of thread worms: always sweated freely at night: subject from earliest years to attacks of frontal headache, with profuse sweating and feverishness (occurring about every 2 mo [months] lasting 24 hours. Cervical abscess at 3 or 4. Lively disposition: not remarkably clever. Loss of flesh for 6 mo [months]. ? Injury to spine. Nine[?] days before admn [admission] he came home, looking very pale and saying that a workman had seized him and shaken him by the hair. In the evening he complained of headache: next day he went to work as usual but came home with increased headache and was obliged to go to bed. On the third day his neck was found to be bent backwards'

He had had rheumatism three times. The first attack occurred when he was 25 years of age. He was laid up for 3 months. He had a second attack when he was 32, and was kept in bed then for 2 months. A third attack occurred when he was 40. On the last occasion he was only kept in bed for 3 days, but he had immediately afterwards some illness which he called pneumonia. The symptoms were cough and blood-spitting’

Medical notes: 'There was some tubercular history in the family: as a child she had frequent barking cough & swollen glands in the neck. The catamenia [menstruation] appeared at 13 and have of late years been irregular & painful, occurring as a rule every three weeks, & never absent, she says, more than 2 months. About Christmas 1879 she was laid up with 'overwork'. Since then she has been in good health, & has acted as a servant to a crêche. Six days before admission she described herself as feeling quite well. A day later menstruation began with diarrhoea and uch pain: she had several rigors next day and the diarrhoea increased with many feverish symptoms. She denied having noticed during her life any abdominal tumour.
