She had had no previous illness of any severity, and in particular had no rheumatism. For the last 2 years of her life she suffered from dyspeptic symptoms. Eighteen weeks before admission she had for the first time an attack of severe abdominal pain lasting 9 hours, and two days later she became jaundiced'

She was very anaemic and weak at this time, and a diagnosis of small white kidney had been made; she dated her troubles entirely from the birth of her last child, in Oct 1903’
