Medical notes: 'She was a general servant to Mrs Kreuger, 14 Tavistock Place, and was brought to the hospital by her mother-in-law. Many details in her history were represented differently by different witnesses, some of her mother-in-law's statements were admittedly false & the history was left very obscure by the subsequent inquest. She was described by her mistress as in good health & spirits on April 20, as being absent from the house for more than 24 hours and on her return April 22 saying that she felt ill & disinclined for food. On 23rd, 24th, 25th she vomited much & seemed worse; on 25th she was taken to St Bartholomew's Hospital but not admitted. A prescription was given her which she got made up elsewhere & took. She was removed to her mother-in-law's house in Knightsbridge in a noisy & talkative state & then according to her mother-in-law's account accused herself of having taken poison'

Two days afterwards her prostration increased; she felt thirsty, feverish; she then took to her bed. Two or three days before admission diarrhoea appeared (2-3 times daily)'

The catamenia [menstruation] appeared at 13 and have of late years been irregular & painful, occurring as a rule every three weeks, & never absent, she says, more than 2 months. About Christmas 1879 she was laid up with 'overwork'. Since then she has been in good health, & has acted as a servant to a crêche. Six days before admission she described herself as feeling quite well. A day later menstruation began with diarrhoea and uch pain: she had several rigors next day and the diarrhoea increased with many feverish symptoms. She denied having noticed during her life any abdominal tumour.
