Medical notes: The patient was in the army from 1880 to 1886 and served in England and Ireland. He contracted syphilis in 1880. Four or five months before his admission he had an attack of diarrhoea. About three weeks before his admission he began to suffer from morning vomiting and oedema of the legs.
