Attacked with shivering about noon 12 days before admn [admission]: had to leave work and go home. Pain in L [Left] hypochondrium, increased at night, after food, or on inspiration; cough, dyspnoea, and occasional palpitation commenced, and continued. Shivering lasted two days. Bowels costive: urine as usual'

He spoke once or twice about half an hour after the first attack, saying that he felt better but subsequently relapsed with further convulsions into complete coma which soon became stertorous'

Infection with syphilis in 1870. A rigor of 2 hrs [hours] duration on Xmas day 1876, after getting wet: felt out of sorts the second day: returned to work on the third, and continued well. About the last week in March following he found his legs swelled […] He entered King's Coll. Hosp. [King's College Hospital] on June 18th, the swelling entirely disappeared and the urine became natural in quantity. He resumed work on Nov. [November] 9th, three weeks later he suddenly lost a considerable portion of his eyesight, which he never recovered. About a week later his urine became bright red. In King's again from Dec. [December] 12th to Jan. [January] 22nd […], and on Feb. [February] 1st was admitted I.P. [In-patient] at Blackfriars Opthalmic Hosp. [Hospital]. […] The day before admn. [admission] he had a 'fit' '
