There was shortening for about an inch & the foot was rotated outwards. He had suffered from paralysis some time before the accident, & had recovered in a great measure, but he always felt weaker on the right side (the side paralyzed) on which the injury took place’

Medical notes: 'This patient, who was a bricklayer’s labourer, was brought to the hospital in a state of collapse, having just been precipitated from the scaffold near the Chinese Exhibition, a height of between 20 and 30 feet. The ribs on the left side were found to be extensively fractured though the exact seat of the injury could not be determined, as there was much emphysema all over the sides & front of the chest, & when he somewhat recovered from the collapse, he was in too great a state of depression to bear much manual examination’

There was a large slough on the back of the right foot, & pain aggravated by motion was complained of in the knee & ankle of the same side which was generally swollen. There was also great pain & swelling of the left knee & ankle, any motion of these joints causing agony. On the back of the right hand & forearm there was also an abscess which was opened soon after her entrance to the hospital’

Medical notes: 'This patient on her entrance to the hospital was in a state of great debility & presented a cachectic appearance, her complexion was pale & sallow. She had been ailing for three years. The first symptoms she noticed was a difficulty in the act of defaecation, owing to the aperture of the anus, or the lower part of the rectum being narrower than in a state of health. She can give no account of the origin of her complaints, but the symptoms have become gradually more severe up to the present time’
