He gradually became weaker & on admission there was complete aphasia with right hemiplegia, but he could just move the leg very slightly. There was slight right facial paralysis’

Medical notes: The patient had been in a soldier. In March 1880 he was in the Presidency of Madras. At that station leprosy was common amongst the natives. Whilst there he had painful swellings in his cheeks and thighs. These disappeared in about six weeks. He then had continued fever for three months. He had a further attack in 1885 and leprosy was diagnosed.
