    Medical notes: 'History. No heritable disease in the family. He was in-patient for an 'abscess on the L. [Left] hip' at 8 yrs [years] old. He was subject to epistaxis, and to cardiac pain and palpitation on much exertion. Otherwise there is nothing to remark in the previous history. He was very abstemious. From the beginning of May 1878 he was very weak, and had no appetite: and a slight shiver came over him some 4-5 times a day. Hot sweats occurred frequently at night during May, June and part of July. They ceased about the middle of July, when he went down to Southsea; and simultaneously with their disappearance a slight cough began, commencing as 'a wheezing in the throat' at night, with no catarrh or sore throat accompanying. […] On Aug [August] 27th diarrhoea commenced'

He was in-patient in Chatham Hospital where his abdomen was tapped 3 times and 25 pints of fluid altogether withdrawn. Felt much relief from this. The legs were also punctured & discharged freely'
