He had then been suffering about a month from ascites, and the legs had become anasarcous only a few days before admission. He had had no pain in his abdomen, except from the tension & sense of fulness latterly; the heart & kidneys appeared to be healthy and the only point of his history that could be made out as bearing upon his state was his having suffered from jaundice 28 years ago’

Medical notes: 'This patient, a farmer by profession, when admitted was a stout, healthy-looking man & he stated that he was of temperate habits, & some three years ago he passed for the first time a calculus of the size of a pea by the urethra, having been subject to passing gravel some years previously. After this, he had pain at the end of the penis after micturition, the stream of urine would sometimes suddenly cease, & then on altering his position flow again, it was also occasionally tinged with blood. These symptoms were increased after much exercise’

She gradually recovered from this operation, but the wound did not heal kindly, the discharge being offensive & [?], & there being a good deal of confinement of matter, requiring the opening to be constantly kept free’

The child was her third, was a seven-month child, and she had nursed it up to her admission’
