Richmond/Surbiton/Kingston transcripts

Loose transcripts (and related correspondence) for pupil/student nurses who trained c. 1955-1979 at the Royal (Richmond), Surbiton, and/or Kingston hospitals, in no consistent order.

The exact institution an individual trained at is often unclear: although these records were previously stored in a ring binder labelled 'Pupil nurse transcripts / Students – Richmond', they are mostly on headed Kingston and Richmond Area Health Authority notepaper, with its headquarters listed as Kingston Hospital.

St Helier Hospital

Registers relating to nurse training at St Helier Hospital/St Helier School of Nursing, Carshalton. For other hospitals in the St Helier Group Hospital Management Committee (1948-1974), see NU/1/13-15.

A set of 'Regulations for Conduct of Examinations' from the GNC has been inserted.

Training record registers

Two registers containing records of student nurse training. The smaller of the two (1950-1956) records the number of lectures attended (broken down by subject) and exam results, while the larger (1952-1957) records ward experience and dates of leave; both registers include name, index number, and date of entry, and the larger one includes some additional information (address, religion, date of birth, education). Wimbledon and Nelson hospitals

Records relating to nurse training at Wimbledon and Nelson hospitals, which operated a combined training school. Both hospitals were part of the St Helier Group Hospital Management Committee from 1948 until the NHS reorganisation of 1974; no records from after 1974 are included in this sub-series, indicating that they were 'legacy' records subsequently transferred elsewhere (presumably to Kingston).

Wimbledon and Nelson training record binders

Four binders of student nurse training records, separated with alphabetical dividers. The records vary in form: those in the first volume include only name, age, dates of ward experience and leave, and dates of exam passes and any prizes; those in the remaining volumes also include address, index number, next of kin, religion, and remarks (but omit the ward experience details).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

1940-1960 [note that this binder is in a larger format than the other three]
1940-1969 [though label on spine incorrectly states 'to Dec 1961']
1961-1970
1970-1974

Wimbledon State Enrolled School register

Registers relating to nurse training at Wandle Valley and Wilson hospitals, which were part of the St Helier Group Hospital Management Committee from 1948 until the NHS reorganisation of 1974; no records from after 1974 are included in this sub-series, indicating that they were 'legacy' records subsequently transferred elsewhere (presumably to Kingston).

Jan 1956 – Autumn 1965
Feb 1963 – Jan 1969
Jan 1969 – c. May 1970
Jan 1969 – May 1970

Epsom area hospitals

Registers and training records relating to nurse training at hospitals in the Epsom area, including Epsom District Hospital, West Park Hospital, Manor Hospital, and St Ebba's Hospital. The last three of these formed part of the 'Epsom cluster' of mental hospitals, though St Ebba's (which was also affiliated to the Carshalton School of Nursing) was changed in 1962 into a hospital for the mentally handicapped.

These records were presumably transferred to Kingston following the merger of Epsom and Kingston schools of nursing (c. early 1990s): the typed labels affixed to many of the volumes appear to have been added at a later date.

Epsom student nurse registers

Two registers of students at the Epsom School of Nursing (with date ranges 1950-1968 and 1969-1971), containing the following information: name, address, date/place of birth, registration/index number, and dates of training/assessment.

Epsom pupil nurse ward allocation registers

Two registers labelled 'Epsom Allocation of Pupil Nurses' (with date ranges 1956-1960 and 1959-1962) containing records of pupil nurse ward/classroom allocation, with dates and additional columns labelled 'Confidential report' and 'Remarks'.
