St Luke's Hospital, Chelsea

Training records and register relating to St Luke's Hospital, Chelsea, which does not seem to have had any direct link to St George's — these records are only in this collection because they relate to nurses transferred or seconded to other hospitals (e.g. the Grove and St James')

Training records

Two London County Council training record forms for nurses who started their training at St Luke's but subsequently transferred to the Grove Hospital and St James' Hospital respectively. The records include the following information: name, date of birth, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving, lecture attendance, examination marks, ward reports, and conduct marks. The earlier of the two forms also encloses an LCC probationer application form to Fulham Hospital and additional quarterly ward report forms.

Register of nurses

Register labelled 'Register of Nurses / St Luke's Hospital' containing brief training records which include the following information: name, date of birth, commencement date, and dates of ward experience. The records generally also state 'Returned to St Luke's Hospital', which indicates that this register relates to secondments of St Luke's nurses to a different hospital, probably in the Kingston Group (as some of the records also mention Surbiton Hospital).

Atkinson Morley's Hospital

Records relating to nursing training at Atkinson Morley's Hospital. Note that AMH was always affiliated to St George's (beginning as a convalescent home for St George's patients), and that in the post-war period trainee nurses from St George's routinely undertook placements there to gain experience in neurosurgical nursing. Researchers interested in AMH should therefore also consult the general St George's registers sub-series (NU/1/1).

Nursing Cadets register

Register of 'Nursing Cadets' at Atkinson Morley's Hospital, 1938-1947 (note that AMH is not mentioned by name except in a note of resignation from one of the cadets inserted into the volume). Includes personal information (address, date of birth, qualifications), details of ward experience and lecture attendance, and brief remarks on performance. Many of the nursing cadets subsequently entered the Preliminary Training School at St George's.

A few apparently unrelated documents have been inserted into the front of the volume, including a 1996 letter from Joan Knock to Heather [Bond?] and a 1960 test paper from Royal United Hospital, Bath.

Grove Hospital

Nurse training records relating to the Grove Hospital (originally the Grove Fever Hospital), Tooting. Note that the Grove became a branch of St George's in 1954.

The records are written on a London County Council form ('Nursing Service – Record of Training'; after 1950 the LCC heading changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving, lecture attendance, examination marks, ward reports, and conduct marks. A majority of the records also have additional Quarterly Ward Report (or 'Sister's Report on Probationer Nurse') forms inserted, and sometimes other documents (correspondence relating to requests for references, written coursework, Fever Training schedules, etc).

Training records: 1943

Training records for nurses who entered the Grove Hospital in 1943, arranged alphabetically by surname. Also includes a loose Matron's Test answer by a Catherine McLean Stoner, and records for a few nurses (surnames Banks, Bell, Cree, Kelly, Reidy) who actually began their training at the South Western Hospital, Stockwell in 1943, before being transferred first to Grassington Sanatorium, Yorkshire and then to the Grove, presumably an arrangement relating to the Second World War.
