Medical notes: Three weeks before admission the patient caught cold. He had a cough with expectoration, much pain across the chest and across the lower part of the belly, the latter immediately began to swell. He never had any jaundice. When admitted the belly was much swollen and fluctuating. An enlargement of the liver could be felt. There was no oedema in the legs or elsewhere, though it was stated that formerly they had been slightly swollen.
