She was brought to the hospital with a report that she had had a fit on the previous day, in which she had become quite unconscious, and since that had been violently delirious’

Medical notes: 'This woman, the mother of 6 children, was admitted with encephaloid disease of the left breast. It appears that 4 days after her last confinement 6 months prior to her admission, the breast became inflamed & an abscess formed, which broke at the end of a month, & discharged pus copiously. At the end of 6 or 7 weeks it healed & a similar abscess formed in the right breast. The child was then reapplied to the left breast & the flow of milk again became established, but ulceration taking place around the nipple continuing to increase, the child at length refused to suckle. A few days after the child was weaned, some hard lumps were discovered at the lower part of the gland, which gradually increased in size without much pain. She was then seized with rheumatic fever, acute in the befinningm but subsequently chronic’

Five or six days afterwards he became disabled & was made an in-patient at the Lock. In about a fortnight afterward some enlargement had taken place around the joint, & an issue was made just behind the trochanter major’

He was alone while it occurred, & was some time before obtaining assistance but during that period he feels certain that there was no loss of consciousness. He managed to crawl to the door of the shop & summon a passer-by to his aid. At first the paralysis was complete but now there is some degree of power, but total anaesthenia continues. He says that his speech was also affected at first, but now there is no paralysis of any of the muscles of the face or tongue’
