His health was good till Nov 1889 when he began to experience pain in the left side of the chest on exertion, not amounting to angina. About the following Christmas oedema of the legs first appeared. He lost strength gradually, and his skin became darker during the first 6 months of 1890. In the middle of July he became jaundiced, painlessly. He vomited a good deal towards the end of August and hence applied at this hospital'

A week later he was taken ill and was seen by the divisional surgeon who diagnosed ‘congestion of the liver from surface-chill. He was kept upon the sick-list for a week, and then was kept in reserve'

He turned a waxy colour having previously been of normal complexion. However he was fairly able-bodied till some 2 or 3 years later when he found that he was losing strength and easily exhausted'

After this he felt out of sorts with ‘general debility, loss of appetite and rumbling in the ears'. He also had irrefular shivers and sweats'
