Registers and training records

Registers and training records relating to nurses who trained or worked at St George's and other hospitals in Wandsworth (most of which were subsequently absorbed into St George's), Surrey (connected to St George's indirectly via the affiliation with Kingston) and South West London

Examination register

Register of nurses' state and hospital examination results, including lists of marks (some of which are on typed lists inserted into the volume) and examiners' comments

Battersea and Bolingbroke student registers

Registers of student nurses at the Battersea and Bolingbroke Hospitals Combined Training School (in practice most of them seem to have been based at Bolingbroke: Battersea is sometimes listed as an affiliation), with alphabetical indexes at the front. The record for each student includes the following information: name, age, date of birth, nationality, religion, education, date of entry/commencement of training, date of signing, affiliated hospital, certificates held, previous nursing experience, sickness, sick leave, lectures attended, examinations, date of leaving, and remarks. Later items of correspondence relating to references/transcripts have been inserted, sometimes including original student record cards.

The date ranges for the volumes are as follows:

1939-1953 [missing cover; first page is detached]
1953-1958 [misleadingly labelled 'St James' on cover, presumably because it was later transferred to St James' Hospital]
1958-1961 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1961-1965 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1965-1967

Staff midwife records

One metal-backed binder and two additional loose sets (fastened with metal fasteners) of records of staff midwives/midwifery sisters (with the occasional pupil midwife/state enrolled nurse mixed in) who worked at the Weir Maternity Hospital (or, for some of the earlier records, St James' Hospital), arranged alphabetically by surname.

Each record includes the following information: name, home/non-resident address, next of kin, age/date of birth, religion, appointment, date of entry/leaving, state registration number, qualifications (divided into training schools and previous appointments), dates of leave/sick leave, health record, and personal report. Additional leave forms have been attached to some of the records.

Wandle Valley and Wilson pupil nurse registers

Registers containing training records of pupil nurses at Wandle Valley and Wilson hospitals. The information recorded varies, but includes name, address, date of birth, index number, date of entry/recruitment, date of assessment, and in some cases number of lectures attended (broken down by subject).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

Jan 1956 – Autumn 1965
Feb 1963 – Jan 1969
Jan 1969 – c. May 1970
Jan 1969 – May 1970

Training records

Two London County Council training record forms for nurses who started their training at St Luke's but subsequently transferred to the Grove Hospital and St James' Hospital respectively. The records include the following information: name, date of birth, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving, lecture attendance, examination marks, ward reports, and conduct marks. The earlier of the two forms also encloses an LCC probationer application form to Fulham Hospital and additional quarterly ward report forms.

Nurses' Fund minute books

Two minute books containing minutes of the Nurses' Fund for Nurses, a charitable organisation which had as its stated object 'To provide poor, elderly or disabled nurses […] with any form of help considered necessary'.

The minutes – initially typed but later handwritten – run from the Fund's first meeting in 1925 to the end of 1959 (vol. 1: 1925-1949; vol. 2: 1950-1959), and are generally signed by committee chair G. E. Copeman (matron of Paddington Hospital); additional loose pages and notes have been inserted.

Grove Hospital

File labelled 'Fever and Tropical Fevers' containing the following:

  • correspondence between Grove Hospital sister tutor Margaret Thomas and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (enclosing syllabus of lectures), Jun 1957
  • correspondence from the General Nursing Council, 1952-1957
  • transcripts and correspondence from former trainees, 1949-1953
  • receipts for books and stationery, 1940s-1950s
  • envelope labelled 'Fever Papers' containing GNC exam papers for fever nurses, 1955-1959
  • quarterly ward report forms and blank record of training form, 1940-1952
  • test paper from trainee nurse Grace Bradford, c.1940s

The Dragon

Set of issues of The Dragon, an apparently short-lived magazine for St George's nurses (c.1928-1929) which published comic verse and prose as well as internal news. Includes issues 1-2 and 4-5 of vol. 1, though it is unclear if a vol. 2 was ever produced; issue no 5 includes a crossword which has been filled in.

Correspondence and certificates

Correspondence and certificates received by or relating to Clara Jeynes, including:

  • cover letter to Roger Evans from Mary Higgs, including details of Clara Jeynes's biography, 2004
  • correspondence from St George's matron J. M. T. Babtie about joining the hospital, 1919
  • St John Ambulance Association course certificate, Feb 1919

  • congratulatory postcard, Apr 1924
  • receipts for donations to St George's Rose Day Fund and appeal for donations in bicentenary year, 1930-1933

St James' nurse personal album

Unlabelled album of black and white photographs (with some handwritten captions) apparently taken by a nurse who trained/worked at St James' Hospital, containing the following inserted note from Heather Bond, chair of the St George's Nurses' League (14 Apr 2000): 'Photograph album of a nurse at St James Hospital Balham in 1927 – Bought in a carboot sale in 1999 by Mr Pat Fry who thought it should be in the hospital archive so gave it to Alex Baker, business manager.'

In addition to shots of St James' nurses and buildings (often on the roof), the album also contains holiday photos of Ramsgate and Bournemouth, and portraits of family members.
