Medical notes: 'There was no history of heritable disease. The woman was a barmaid, in which calling she had been much exposed to draughts. Before the onset of the diabetes she had suffered from no serious illness. No cause, mental or bodily, could be made out for the origin of the disease. It probably began about two years before her death when her general health began to fail and her thirst was noticed to be great. Her appetite was never large, but after a time her thirst became excessive. During the last eight months she stated that she had been devoid or nearly so of taste and smell'

Her circumstances were poor, and she eked out a living by doing the work of a tailoress. In 1880 she was confined twice, both children being still-born. She had suffered from cough and copious expectoration without haemoptysis for two years; for six months the legs had been liable to swell; and for four months she had been unable to work on account of general weakness and shortness of breath. About three years before her death she began to suffer from ‘indigestion', not of severe character, the chief symptom being pain at the epigastrium especially on exertion which shot down to both wrists. For these three years she had been an invalid, unable to work. Oedema of the legs was first noticed a fortnight before admission and advanced rapidly. He had enjoyed good health, except for a slight attack of ‘pleurisy' on the left side about the middle of 1890. He had had no previous rheumatism. On June 7th 1891 in the afternoon he found that he had pain in the legs. This became rapidly severe and extended to the wrists so that the same evening he could not undress himself. The patient was formerly healthy and became a nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital. While thus employed she was found to be diabetic about seven months before her death. No cause was made out for the onset of the disease unless it was to be attributed to anxiety about the illness of her father. Six weeks before her death she left the Norwich hospital on account of failing health, and came to London. She had been recently nursing a case of influenza, and on the night of June 9th was taken severely ill with pain on the right side of the chest and dyspnoea'
