Medical notes: 'This man was a meat-porter, an occupation which he had followed for 6 years, and in the pursuit of which he was in the habit of carrying loads of 3-4 cwt [hundredweight]. Since the age of adolescence he had suffered from many attacks of rheumatism, some 15 or 16 in all. In 1883 he contracted a chancre which was followed by a rash on the body, but he underwent no medicinal treatment'
