He had a primary sore on the penis & a bubo in each groin. He was put under the influence of mercury & five weeks afterwards (his mouth being still sore), he began to feel pain in the left hip & knee & walked lame. Five or six days afterwards he became disabled & was made an in-patient at the Lock. In about a fortnight afterward some enlargement had taken place around the joint, & an issue was made just behind the trochanter major’

By far the greater number varied in size from that of a split pea to that of a bean, but 5 or 6 were as large or larger than walnuts’

His urine was acid & contained a small quantity of pus, but the bladder was not irritable & the prostate neither enlarged or tender’

After he had been a few days in the hospital it was discovered that he laboured under difficulty in passing urine which flowed in a small stream & on the 18th an attempt was made to introduce a catheter into the bladder without success, in consequence of a firm stricture situated about the membranous portion of the urethra’
