Training records: 1954-1955

Records of training undertaken by nurses at the Grove between 1954 and 1955 (specified on some of the records as 'fever training'). Note that by this time the Grove had become a branch of St George's Hospital, and so was no longer recruiting nurses independently.

Alphabetical registers recording nurses' training experience on the hospital's wards. Each individual record includes name, dates of commencement and leaving, and lists of wards/departments worked on (with dates).

Alphabetical register of 'Staff nurses, State Enrolled/Pupil nurses, and Child Attendants'. Individual records include name, dates of commencement and leaving, and dates of ward work and holiday/sick leave.

Post Graduate Paediatric Students register

Register of 'Post Graduate Paediatric Students, commencing 6 Apr 1961'. Individual records include name, dates of tuition and ward experience, and dates of leaving.

An index card (apparently written by a later librarian/archivist) listing the Victoria Hospital registers (including some not retained in this collection) has been inserted into the volume.

St James' Hospital

Records relating to nurse training at St James' Hospital, Balham, which amalgamated with St George's in 1980 and closed in 1988.

Note that some records for St James' midwives are mixed in with those for Weir Maternity Hospital: see NU/1/9.

Training records: A-C

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (A-C).

The records are written on a London County Council 'Nursing Service – Record of Training' form (though by 1950 the heading had changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, marital status, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving (or transfer to other hospitals), lecture attendance, examination marks, dates of leave, details of wards worked on, and ward reports. They sometimes have additional documents inserted, including photographs and correspondence relating to requests for references/transcripts.

Student nurse record binder: Not completed, G-L

Metal-backed binder containing records of student nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1950s-1960s but did not complete their training, arranged alphabetically by surname (G-L – no records for the second half of the alphabet are extant in this collection). Each individual record includes the following information: name, address, non-resident address, next of kin, age, date of birth, religion, country of origin (for records from 1960s onwards), marital status/maiden name, education, previous occupation, dates of training and leaving, number of lectures attended, study days, examinations, health record, sickness and special leave/holidays, and 'particulars of training' (dates and types of ward experience, with brief reports).

The records generally have a passport-style photograph affixed to the top right-hand corner.

Typed lists of student and pupil nurses at St James', arranged in reverse chronological order by year of intake. Each list is accompanied with an additional sheet recording the following information about each student: name, date of birth, age, educational qualifications (left blank after 1972), previous nursing experience, nationality (note that 'British' and 'English' are both used), country of origin, year of leaving, date of leaving, and reason for leaving.

Pupil nurse registers

Registers of pupil nurses' lecture attendance and test marks. Each register also includes an annotated class photograph.
