Medical notes: 'History. For 1 year, patient had had pain in the L. [Left] hypochondrium rather more marked after food. For three months, his general health had been failing, he had been losing flesh and was becoming progressively weaker. Obstinate constipation during the same period, though the bowels had been regular before: aperients used habitually for this: no blood, slime etc. In the motions. Occasional nausea, no vomiting. Past History unimportant'
