Medical notes: 'This man was a baker but since April 1891 he had not worked, having been laid up at that time by severe illness in some hospital or infirmary. In June he was able to walk away and was lost sight of by his relations. On the day of his death he spent some hours lying upon the grass in Hyde Park in the company of a casual acquaintance. He complained of feeling unwell, and in particular had no appetite. While on the grass he blacked his own and his companions boots and made a slight alteration in his dress. Upon rising to go, having walked a very few years, he fell to the ground with a cry of pain, pressing his hands to the front of the chest. He became ‘black as jet' in the face and died very speedily, before he could be brought to this hospital'

During youth and middle age he used to drink heavily, but had good health upon the whole. In 1881 he had his first attack of epistaxis, and afterwards several occurred, till in August 1886 he was admitted into this hospital for profuse epistaxis, which necessitated plugging of the nostrils. At that time there was slight oedema of the legs; the pulse was noted as hard and jerky; the urine was copious, pale, of lower specific gravity than normal and slightly albuminous, and there was a double murmur over the whole cardiac area as well as a systolic mitral murmur'

Medical notes: 'There was no history of heritable disease. The woman was a barmaid, in which calling she had been much exposed to draughts. There is no reason to suppose that she was otherwise than temperate in the use of alcohol. Her health had always been good before the end of October 1890: she was not known ever to have had scarlatina, and no previous dropsy had been observed. At the time mentioned the lower extremities became oedematous, and a fortnight later the eyelids were swollen. She felt as though in perfect health but sought advice at this hospital on account of the swelling'

He had enjoyed good health, suffering from no gout or rheumatism, till about eight years before his death when he became ruptured on the right side and soon afterwards found that he was passing more urine than natural'

She enjoyed very good health for the most part; had no gout and remembered no rheumatism. About three years before her death she began to suffer from ‘indigestion', not of severe character, the chief symptom being pain at the epigastrium especially on exertion which shot down to both wrists. For these three years she had been an invalid, unable to work. Oedema of the legs was first noticed a fortnight before admission and advanced rapidly. There was no history of previous pulmonary trouble'
