Oral history by Bryan Brooke & Terry Gould

The collection consists of audio recordings of staff at St George's Hospital and Medical School. Each interview is recorded on audio cassette and is accompanied by a synopsis of the interview (no transcription).

The accompanying notes state that the collection was established to create 'a picture of a teaching hospital in the westend of London with a small intake and no preclinical department, in transition to a large and complete university hospital and in transposition to a south London suburb - Tooting. No attempt has been made to select those considered by contemporaries to be of distinction since it is not possible to predict who will appear to have been distinguished in the eyes of the future: conversely there has been no avoidance of the contemporarily distinguished. [...] Since two reminiscences go back before WWI and span both wars, this audioarchive will, at the outset, have covered almost the whole of the twentieth century.'

St George's Hospital

Registers and training records relating to nurses who trained or worked at St George's Hospital or (from the late 1970s) the expanded St George's District School of Nursing

St George's Hospital Nurses Signatures

Volume containing nurses' signatures, pledging to 'abide by the Rules of the Hospital relating to my office'. Printed sets of rules are attached to the pages, with different lists for each category of nurse (head nurses, night nurses, ward nurses, etc).

Student register

Register of students who entered the South London Hospital for Women and Children from 1942-1952, with an alphabetical index at the front. Information recorded includes name, address, dates of entry and leaving, examination pass/failure, and sometimes subsequent employment. A diagram of a human skeleton (apparently taken from a magazine) has been inserted into the front of the volume.

The spine of the register is incorrectly labelled 'St James', presumably because it was later transferred there. Note that there is seemingly no explicit reference to the South London Hospital anywhere in the volume: its provenance has been inferred from cross-referencing the names of students with those mentioned in publications of the SLH Nurses' League (see NU/5/55/6), who do not appear in St James' records from the same period; note also that the records sometimes refer to separate 'Male Nursing' training at the South Western Hospital (Stockwell), something that would not have been necessary at a mixed-gender hospital.

Lecture Room Register

Register labelled 'Lecture Room Register' containing records of nursing student lecture attendance, with an alphabetical index at the front. Each record includes the following information: name, age, date of 19th birthday, dates of entry and leaving, number of lectures attended (listed by subject), marks gained, and dates certificates were awarded (preliminary, final, CMB [Central Midwives Board]). In some cases the original name has been overlaid with a paper strip featuring a different name.

St George's School of Nursing stock book

Notebook labelled 'Stock Book' containing inventories of classroom and office equipment at No 7, Knightsbridge (the address of St George's Hospital School of Nursing), divided up by location or type (e.g. instruments, glassware, linen). The written date range of the book is 1948-1965, but it also contains a taped-in receipt from 1932 and numerous loose inserted documents including lists of missing equipment and a typed list of 'Equipment taken from 7 Knightsbridge to the Grove Hospital in Apr 1960'.

Architectural plans

Three folded architectural plans produced by the firm of W. H. Watkins, Gray & Partners (aka Watkins Gray), depicting the following:

i) Tooting Grove Experimental Ward: 30 Bed Ward Unit, 5 Nov 1963
ii) Tooting Grove 30 Bed Experimental Ward Unit: Joinery Details - Cleaner's room, hinged shelves & seats, 9 Jul 1964
iii) Atkinson Morley's Hospital, Wimbledon: Rehabilitation Centre – Floor plan at level 91.00, Jul 1964

St George's Hospital School of Nursing

Various versions of the prospectus for St George's Hospital School of Nursing, including six variant copies of an illustrated brochure and seven accompanying paper booklets (for the years 1955-1957, 1958-1959, 1960-1963, and 1966-1967 – two of these are enclosed at the back of the brochures).

Although all of the booklets date from the period in which Muriel Powell was Matron, the earliest brochure refers to her predecessor Helen Hanks, who resigned in 1947.
