Medical notes: 'There was no history of heritable disease. The woman was a barmaid, in which calling she had been much exposed to draughts. There is no reason to suppose that she was otherwise than temperate in the use of alcohol. Her health had always been good before the end of October 1890: she was not known ever to have had scarlatina, and no previous dropsy had been observed. At the time mentioned the lower extremities became oedematous, and a fortnight later the eyelids were swollen. She felt as though in perfect health but sought advice at this hospital on account of the swelling'

Medical notes: 'There was no family history of diabetes or nervous disease. The woman had lived continuously in Norwood for twenty years. She had borne three children and had one miscarriage. Before the onset of the diabetes she had suffered from no serious illness. No cause, mental or bodily, could be made out for the origin of the disease. It probably began about two years before her death when her general health began to fail and her thirst was noticed to be great. Her appetite was never large, but after a time her thirst became excessive. During the last eight months she stated that she had been devoid or nearly so of taste and smell'

About March 1890 he had a slight attack of influenza, but his general health was very good till November 9th 1890 when acute dropsy set in after he had ‘caught a cold' and shivered. He was admitted into the Victoria Hospital for Children on Nov 19th in a condition of general anasarca, the urine being free from blood but nearly solid with albumen on boiling'

There was no history of previous chest affections, and no haemoptysis. For 12 months ending three years before admission she had been confined to her home by rheumatism. On June 11th he began to bring up blood in large quantity (it was thought by vomiting). This continued, and on June 13th he took to bed. She enjoyed very good health for the most part; had no gout and remembered no rheumatism. About three years before her death she began to suffer from ‘indigestion', not of severe character, the chief symptom being pain at the epigastrium especially on exertion which shot down to both wrists. For these three years she had been an invalid, unable to work. Oedema of the legs was first noticed a fortnight before admission and advanced rapidly. The patient was formerly healthy and became a nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital. While thus employed she was found to be diabetic about seven months before her death. No cause was made out for the onset of the disease unless it was to be attributed to anxiety about the illness of her father. Six weeks before her death she left the Norwich hospital on account of failing health, and came to London.
