Training records: N-Y

Training records for nurses who entered St James' Hospital in the 1930s-1950s, arranged alphabetically by surname (N-Y).

The records are written on a London County Council 'Nursing Service – Record of Training' form (though by 1950 the heading had changed to Wandsworth Hospital Group) and include the following information: name, date of birth, marital status, parents'/guardian's address, education, dates of training and leaving (or transfer to other hospitals), lecture attendance, examination marks, dates of leave, details of wards worked on, and ward reports. They sometimes have additional documents inserted, including photographs and correspondence relating to requests for references/transcripts.

Student nurse register

London County Council register of student nurses who entered St James' Hospital between 1948 and 1951, with an alphabetical index at the front of the volume. Information recorded includes name, date of birth, date of entry, and dates of ward work and annual leave. Several items of correspondence relating to references/transcripts (dating from several decades later) have been inserted.

Student nurse record binder: Completed, A-F

Battersea, Bolingbroke and Putney hospitals

Records relating to nurse training at Bolingbroke, Battersea and Putney hospitals, whose training schools were amalgamated (c. early 1960s?) to form the Battersea, Bolingbroke & Putney Combined Training School (Battersea and Bolingbroke having already merged previously). Following the NHS reorganisation of 1974 (by which time Battersea General Hospital had already closed), these records were transferred to the South West London Group School of Nursing (based at St James' Hospital, Balham) and subsequently St George's District School of Nursing.

Battersea and Bolingbroke student registers

Registers of student nurses at the Battersea and Bolingbroke Hospitals Combined Training School (in practice most of them seem to have been based at Bolingbroke: Battersea is sometimes listed as an affiliation), with alphabetical indexes at the front. The record for each student includes the following information: name, age, date of birth, nationality, religion, education, date of entry/commencement of training, date of signing, affiliated hospital, certificates held, previous nursing experience, sickness, sick leave, lectures attended, examinations, date of leaving, and remarks. Later items of correspondence relating to references/transcripts have been inserted, sometimes including original student record cards.

The date ranges for the volumes are as follows:

1939-1953 [missing cover; first page is detached]
1953-1958 [misleadingly labelled 'St James' on cover, presumably because it was later transferred to St James' Hospital]
1958-1961 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1961-1965 ['Bolingbroke Students']
1965-1967

Putney/Bolingbroke student record cards

Loose record cards (originally stored in a filing system) relating to student nurses at Putney and Bolingbroke hospitals (and possibly others: the cards mention periods of secondment to hospitals including St James', St Benedict's [Tooting], St John's [Battersea], and Weir Maternity) who trained between 1959 and 1970, arranged alphabetically by surname. Each record includes the following information: name, address, date and place of birth, index number, religion, next of kin, education, school leaving age, previous experience, dates of entry and completion/leaving, examination results, number of lectures attended, dates of leave, and dates of ward work.

Items of correspondence relating to requests for references (or applications for shortened periods of training from the General Nursing Council) are sometimes stapled to the cards.

South London Hospital for Women and Children

Records relating to the South London Hospital for Women and Children. Although it was part of the Lambeth Group Hospital Management Committee, its transfer to the Wandsworth and East Merton (Teaching) District Health Authority in 1974 meant that some of its records ended up in the custody of St George's District School of Nursing (via St James', Balham).

Student register

Register of students who entered the South London Hospital for Women and Children from 1942-1952, with an alphabetical index at the front. Information recorded includes name, address, dates of entry and leaving, examination pass/failure, and sometimes subsequent employment. A diagram of a human skeleton (apparently taken from a magazine) has been inserted into the front of the volume.

The spine of the register is incorrectly labelled 'St James', presumably because it was later transferred there. Note that there is seemingly no explicit reference to the South London Hospital anywhere in the volume: its provenance has been inferred from cross-referencing the names of students with those mentioned in publications of the SLH Nurses' League (see NU/5/55/6), who do not appear in St James' records from the same period; note also that the records sometimes refer to separate 'Male Nursing' training at the South Western Hospital (Stockwell), something that would not have been necessary at a mixed-gender hospital.

Springfield Hospital

Records relating to the training of nurses at Springfield Hospital (or the secondment of Springfield nurses to St George's). Springfield became part of Wandsworth and East Merton (Teaching) District Health Authority in 1974, and in the 1990s became the headquarters of the South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

Nurses' registers

Group of four registers (the first with its original label missing and the other three labelled 'Nurses' Register') recording details about student nurses including name, age/date of birth, religion, marital status, index number, date of entry, previous nursing experience, education, previous occupation, home address, and form of application. A few later items of correspondence have been inserted.

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

May 1947 – Oct 1962 [the information recorded in this alphabetical register – inaccurately labelled 'Register 1949-1954' - is more minimal than the later three, including only name, index number, and dates of entry/assessment/qualification or reason for discontinuation; the overlap in content indicates that it was used in tandem with the others to record completion/leaving dates]
Jan 1950 – Oct 1955
Nov 1955 – May 1961
Jun 1961 – Feb 1962

Lecture registers

Registers of student attendance at lectures/study days, including summaries of lecture topics. The registers cover sets of students from different year groups and courses (e.g. '1st year psychiatry'; '2nd year medicine'), including graduate entrants and students on secondment from St James' and St George's hospitals (the latter sometimes on the joint course then offered with the University of Surrey).

The date ranges of the volumes are as follows:

Apr 1971 – Dec 1973
Sep 1973 – Sep 1975 ['Register of lectures']
Apr 1975 – Jan 1978 ['Students']
Sep 1977 – Aug 1980 ['Students register']

Record of Results

Register labelled 'Record of Results Throughout Training' containing lists of exam results for nursing students who entered Springfield between 1969 and 1981. Information recorded includes name, GNC [General Nursing Council] index number, length of course, dates of introductory course, results of introductory/intermediate and final exams (divided into 'Hospital' and 'GNC', and including written and practical components), and dates of completion of training or leaving.

Springfield Mental Health registers

Group of registers labelled 'Springfield Mental Health' containing records of attendance/ward experience for student, pupil, and post-registration mental health nurses. During the period covered by these registers, Springfield training seems to have been co-ordinated with St George's District School of Nursing, which by the early 1990s had become the St George's & Roehampton College of Health Studies, as indicated by memos/printouts inserted into the registers.

The date ranges of the volumes (which often differ from those listed on the spines) are as follows:

1979-1984 [includes students who entered in 1976]
1985-1986 [includes students who entered in 1981; spine incorrectly labelled '1993']
1987-1988 [includes students who entered in 1984; spine incorrectly labelled '1991 and 1992']
1989 [includes students who entered in 1987]
1991-1992 [includes students who entered in 1987; spine incorrectly labelled '1987-1988']
1993 [includes students who entered in 1990; spine incorrectly labelled '1985-1986']

Springfield General Nursing Experience register

Register labelled 'Springfield Students: General Nursing Experience' relating to RMN (i.e. mental health nurse) students' secondment to St George's District School of Nursing to gain general nursing experience. It includes records of attendance at lectures/study days, assessment grades, and on some pages test questions from the study days; various annotated timetables and printed lists have been inserted.

Staff midwife records

One metal-backed binder and two additional loose sets (fastened with metal fasteners) of records of staff midwives/midwifery sisters (with the occasional pupil midwife/state enrolled nurse mixed in) who worked at the Weir Maternity Hospital (or, for some of the earlier records, St James' Hospital), arranged alphabetically by surname.

Each record includes the following information: name, home/non-resident address, next of kin, age/date of birth, religion, appointment, date of entry/leaving, state registration number, qualifications (divided into training schools and previous appointments), dates of leave/sick leave, health record, and personal report. Additional leave forms have been attached to some of the records.

Pupil midwife records: A to M

Metal-backed binder containing records of pupil midwives who trained at the Weir Maternity Hospital (or, for some of the earlier records, St James' Hospital), arranged alphabetically by surname (A-M). Each record includes the following information: name, home/non-resident address, next of kin, age/date of birth, religion, appointment, date of entry/leaving, state registration number, qualifications (divided into training schools and previous appointments), dates of leave/sick leave, health record, and personal report.

Pupil midwife records: Mc to Z

Metal-backed binder containing records of pupil midwives who trained at the Weir Maternity Hospital (or, for some of the earlier records, St James' Hospital), arranged alphabetically by surname (Mc-Z). Each record includes the following information: name, home/non-resident address, next of kin, age/date of birth, religion, appointment, date of entry/leaving, state registration number, qualifications (divided into training schools and previous appointments), dates of leave/sick leave, health record, and personal report.

Some later items of correspondence have been inserted into the volume.

Nurses' Fund minute books

Two minute books containing minutes of the Nurses' Fund for Nurses, a charitable organisation which had as its stated object 'To provide poor, elderly or disabled nurses […] with any form of help considered necessary'.

The minutes – initially typed but later handwritten – run from the Fund's first meeting in 1925 to the end of 1959 (vol. 1: 1925-1949; vol. 2: 1950-1959), and are generally signed by committee chair G. E. Copeman (matron of Paddington Hospital); additional loose pages and notes have been inserted.
